Maria
Description
Maria has two separate presentations in Lucid Blocks. In the cutscenes she is a fleshy, almost photographic figure tied to the rosary — first in the new-game intro, where she hands the player the rosary and a single line of text reads I... am Maria...., and again in the pre-ending video, where she lies on the ground holding the rosary as the player approaches the final boss. The vermin you can encounter while playing is the same model with no texture and a flat black material on every surface, scaled up about 1.5x — a plain silhouette of the cutscene woman.
That overworld Maria is not a fight. The entity has no AI loop, no aggression, no health management, and no death routine. It only does two things: pick a random rotation when it spawns, and remove itself from the world the instant the player crosses about 17 blocks of distance. There is no hit, no drop, no kill confirmation, no Tiamana — the encounter is built to end before the player can do anything to it. She also keeps ticking while off-screen, so a sighting can disappear before the player ever turns to look directly at her.
Maria does not roll on any biome table. She comes from the global rare-encounter pool that only fires in the main dimension, alongside Ofanim, Baal, Fruit Femme, Leviathan, Blasphemy, Hamsa, Ahuizotl, and Moccos. The rare timer skews toward later in a save — the chance of starting it grows each in-game day the world is loaded, so first sightings usually come after several days of ordinary play and not on a fresh world.
The lore framing is deliberately creepypasta-shaped. Maria does not have a vermin capsule, does not appear in any spawner item, and the in-world version exists only as the black silhouette that vanishes on approach. Community discussion treats her as the closest thing the game has to an ARG-style apparition — a recurring sighting that some players go entire saves without seeing, with no in-game text, log entry, or quest hook to confirm what was just witnessed. The internal filenames tighten the loop: the Wandering Spirit perk is maria_perk.tres, and dybbuk's necklace is maria_locket_1.tres, even though no overworld Maria ever drops them. Whether the cutscene Maria and the silhouette are the same character is left for the player to decide; the developer has only confirmed that Maria is not the player.
